Boston, 1986: Black Francis, Joey Santiago, Kim Deal and David Lovering invented the alternation between whispered verse and screamed chorus that would structure 1990s rock. Kurt Cobain said he had tried to copy them. Surfer Rosa came out in 1988, Doolittle in 1989, a platinum record. Split in 1993, they returned to the stage in 2004.
