Etta James
Born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles in 1938, she was recording by 1954 and signed to Chess in 1960. Her contralto crosses blues, gospel, jazz and soul: At Last, Something's Got a Hold on Me, Tell Mama, I'd Rather Go Blind. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, she won several Grammys. She died in 2012.
