Louis Armstrong
Born in New Orleans in 1901, the trumpeter shifted the centre of gravity of jazz from collective improvisation to the solo. His Hot Five and Hot Seven sessions, between 1925 and 1928, carry the trace of it. In 1964 Hello, Dolly! took him to the top of the Hot 100 at 62, a longevity record for a number one. He died in 1971.
