Ella Fitzgerald
Born in Virginia in 1917, she debuted at the Apollo in Harlem in 1934 and then joined Chick Webb's orchestra. Between 1956 and 1964, she recorded eight Song Books devoted to Cole Porter, Duke Ellington and George Gershwin. Her diction, her timing and her scat earned her thirteen Grammys, the National Medal of Arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She died in 1996.
