Nina Simone
Eunice Waymon, born in North Carolina in 1933, trained on piano from childhood and spent the summer of 1950 at the Juilliard School. Turned down by the Curtis Institute, which would give her an honorary degree two days before her death, she turned to singing. Her cover of I Loves You Porgy reached number eighteen on the Hot 100 in 1959. More than forty albums recorded.
