Otis Redding
Signed to Stax in 1962, Otis Redding gave Southern soul its most recognisable voice, from These Arms of Mine to Try a Little Tenderness. He died in a plane crash on 10 December 1967, at 26. (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay, recorded a few days earlier, became the first posthumous number one in Billboard Hot 100 history.
