Billie Holiday
Eleanora Fagan, born in 1915 in Philadelphia, was spotted in 1933 by John Hammond and recorded her first songs with Benny Goodman. Her records with pianist Teddy Wilson, from 1935, set her phrasing as that of an instrumentalist. Strange Fruit, in 1939, denounces lynching. She died in 1959 at 44, and is ranked the fourth greatest singer of all time by Rolling Stone.
