Duke Ellington
Born in Washington in 1899 and died in 1974, a pianist and bandleader, the author of more than a thousand compositions. His orchestra ran for close to fifty years. Thirteen Grammys, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969 and a special Pulitzer Prize citation, awarded posthumously in 1999.
