John Lennon
Founder of the Quarrymen in 1956, who became the Beatles in 1960, he was their rhythm guitarist and one of their two singers. Twenty-five songs he sang, wrote or co-wrote have reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Double Fantasy won the Grammy for album of the year in 1981, a few weeks after his murder in New York on 8 December 1980. He was forty.
