Jacques Brel
A Belgian born in Schaerbeek in 1929, Brel moved to Paris in 1953 and broke through with Quand on n'a que l'amour in 1956. Ne me quitte pas, Amsterdam and Le Plat Pays are among his most covered songs, by David Bowie and Ray Charles. He left the stage in 1966 for cinema, recorded Les Marquises in 1977 and died the following year. More than 25 million albums sold.
