R.E.M.
Four University of Georgia students founded the band in Athens in 1980. Out of Time, in 1991, went to number one in both the American and British charts and sold 4.2 million copies in the United States. Automatic for the People passed fifteen million worldwide. Three Grammy Awards in 1992, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, their first year of eligibility. They split in September 2011.
