Born in Washington in 1939, died in Los Angeles in 1984. Signed to Tamla, a Motown subsidiary, he had hit after hit before I Heard It Through the Grapevine, his first number one in December 1968. What's Going On brought the concept album format into soul in 1971. Let's Get It On gave him a second number one in 1973, and Sexual Healing two Grammy Awards.
