Luther Vandross
A backing singer for David Bowie, Aretha Franklin and Chic before recording under his own name, the American sold more than forty million records and had eleven consecutive platinum albums. Never Too Much opened the run in 1981. Dance with My Father, in 2003, remains his only number one on the Billboard 200 and won him one of his eight Grammy Awards. He died in 2005, at 54.
