Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett launched the project in 1998, with four drawn characters: 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel. The first album, carried by Clint Eastwood, is triple platinum in the United Kingdom. Demon Days went six times platinum there and double platinum in the United States, with Feel Good Inc. spending eight weeks atop the Alternative Songs chart. Guinness recognises them as the best-selling virtual band.
