The foundations
IAM · L'École du micro d'argent (1997) remains the most cited French rap record. Partly recorded in New York with Wu-Tang Clan producers, it contains Demain c'est loin, over fifteen minutes long.
Suprême NTM · Paris sous les bombes (1995) earned the group its first gold certification a few months after release, then platinum in 1997.
Booba · Temps mort (2002), his first solo album after the end of Lunatic, sold 100,000 copies within a few months.
The 2010s turning point
PNL · Le monde Chico (2015) was self-released on the QLF label, with no record company and no radio play. Its aesthetic of videos shot abroad set a template.
Nekfeu · Feu (2015) posted the biggest opening in the history of the French download chart, with 35,944 sales in one week.
Damso · Ipséité (2017) and SCH · A7 (2015) imposed two opposite visual worlds, one stripped back, the other cinematic.
The streaming decade
Jul · L'ovni (2016) reached diamond in June 2022, almost six years after release, following the biggest opening of the artist's career with 72,313 sales in one week.
Ninho · M.I.L.S 2.0 (2018) is certified diamond for over 500,000 sales equivalents, and unusually, every one of its tracks has been certified.
Orelsan · Le Chant des sirènes (2011) won the Victoire for urban music album in 2012.
Laylow · TRINITY (2020), a concept album built around an imaginary piece of software that would erase emotions, earned its author his first platinum certification.
