El Gran Combo
The Puerto Rican salsa orchestra was founded on 26 May 1962 by pianist Rafael Ithier, who led it until his death in December 2025. Nicknamed La Universidad de la Salsa, it played to 50,000 people at Yankee Stadium in 1973 opening for the Fania All Stars, and has lined up gold records since De siempre, in 1963.
